Powers —
Skills:
- Lock picking
- Amateur vlogger
Superpowers: Kablooie Powers Lana can shoot projectile energy beams from her hands for explosive effects or shockwaves, both of which emit loud booming sounds. By directing her blast emissions downward, she is capable of short-ranged flight.
Limitations: When she was younger, Lana's powers only worked when she was in close proximity to her mother. While this limitation has been lifted, Lana's stamina and emotional state can also affect her ability to use her powers. The more tired or emotional she is, the less reliable her concussive blasts are.
Personality —
Lana is pretty aloof most of the time, not caring about what's going on around her. She was raised by her mother Lori, who was a career thief and criminal. Lori wasn't the best role model for Lana, and so she grew up in a life of crime, always being taught to look out for number one. At the time, Lana thought nothing of her villain lifestyle, because she didn't know anything different, but once she was 15 and her mother was sent to jail, she wanted to separate herself from her old lifestyle as much as possible.
When she was younger, Lana was impulsive, always charging headlong into a fight rather than backing away from one. After she stopped stealing and started going to high school, she began avoiding confrontations in an effort to distance herself from her old life. But after Lana met Cloak, Dagger, Spider-Man, and Spider-Woman, and teamed up with them to take down Roxxon, Lana changed her goal from 'ignore my superpowers and be a normal girl,' to 'use my powers to help people and be a superhero.' Because of the haphazard way Lori raised her, Lana's sense of right and wrong was so skewed that she never knew how good it could feel to help people, and once she got a taste of it, she wanted more. At first, her reasons for being a hero were more selfish than altruistic; she did good deeds because they made her feel good, and because she wanted the attention of her hero friends and crushes. But as time went on, she began to understand that heroes do good because good needs doing, not because of the way it makes them feel to do it.
We don't know what happens to Lana between when she started at Peter's school and when she shows up in Miles Morales' life, but at some point she started wearing a costume again. Chances are, this is at least in part because when Peter died, everyone found out he was Spider-Man, and Lana saw that the nerdy guy she knew from school was the same guy who risked his life again and again fighting superpowered criminals. Lana never received the "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" speech, but after Peter died, she started to figure it out on her own.
Lana has suffered a great deal of trauma in her young life. Apart from watching her mom be sent to a S.H.I.E.L.D. maximum security prison, she witnessed two of her ex-boyfriends die in front of her, and has been subjected to mind control and brainwashing on multiple occasions. The shock and grief of these events has made Lana walk away from the superhero teams she was on, to reevaluate her life, a few times.
The first time, when she left the New Ultimates after Poey’s murder, she ended up donning her Bombshell costume again when her teammates got kidnapped, and she blasted in to save the day. In the process, she realized that maybe Poey hadn't been the greatest boyfriend to her, and that instead she had just liked the feeling of being in love. Realizing this helped Lana move on from her grief.
The most recent time Lana turned her back on her life as a hero, it was after she had been brainwashed by C.R.A.D.L.E. in one of their re-education centers. This form of mind control was more insidious, and harder to bounce back from, ending with Lana seeing multiple therapists to help sort through her traumatic experiences.
Gameplay —
Areas of Interest / Brainstorming: Lana is coming fresh off her rescue from C.R.A.D.L.E., and her first public appearance after starting therapy to recover from the brainwashing she endured. Being confronted with a new society that is pressuring metahumans to register with one of the guilds is going to trigger some complex feelings in Lana, as there is still a part of her that believes what the C.R.A.D.L.E. enforcers wanted her to believe, that superheroism is too dangerous for teens, and that being a hero is wrong. But deep in her heart of hearts, Lana knows that isn't true, and is trying to regain her confidence in being a hero. It will be interesting to see whether she ends up going with the flow and joining a guild, or if she will rebel like her friends would want her to do.
