[He mentally denotes the deep breath she'd taken.]

I don't think anybody would come out of facing chaos and panic without feeling some type of fatigue. How did you feel? Were you frightened? Were you scared? [He searchigly adds more.] Perhaps it's affected you physically in some other way...

Uhm. I wasn't too bad. I mean, it was still bad, but I've dealt with worse, before, so.

I didn't get hurt, which is better than some people can say, so I guess I should be grateful.

[There's a short, considerate pause. He begins connecting ideas that hint something's happened in her past.]

Guilt is traditional. Depending on the background in which you're raised.

[He says this next part so quietly and politely.]

Or those who've survived large and traumatic events.

Heh, yeah. You've got me there. The prison stuff was crazy, but kind of nothing in comparison to stuff from home.

I see. [A pause.] What kind of stuff are you comfortable talking about, may I ask? The stuff from home, I should say.

Oh, um. I dunno, most of it?

...There's some, like, doctor-patient confidentiality thing, right?

Whatever you choose to reveal shall remain in the strictest confidence. So. Where would you like to begin?

Uhmm, god, we could start anywhere. What sort of stuff do you wanna know?

Let's begin with how things were at home. Let's say just before you were brought here. Were you more excited than you are today? Do you feel the need to return home and finish things? I want to establish what sort of life you came from; just in case it's relevant to my later questions.

Well... [ She takes a deep breath. ] I was sort of in the middle of this... thing, right before I got ported here. My team was fighting this drug gang, and they wanted to get back at us, so they... God, this is hard. They killed my boyfriend, then hit me with this mind control thing and made me give them all my money, and then made me attack my team. My friends.

A couple of them— my friends, I mean— are here, but they're from earlier in time than I am, so none of us know how it ended. I kind of want to go back and make sure my friends get out okay, but at the same time... it's kind of nice to be here and not have to deal with that? You know?
